The Bank of Elk River proudly recognizes Chief Operating Officer Bill LaVigne for his exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to community banking over the past 25 years. From his early days as a branch manager to guiding the bank through historic challenges and transformative growth, Bill’s career reflects resilience, innovation, and a deep dedication to customers and community.
Bill began his banking career at TCF Bank before joining The Bank of Elk River in 2000 as a Branch Manager. He later became Assistant Director of Retail Banking in 2006, Director of Retail Banking in 2008, and Chief Operating Officer in 2011. He played a pivotal role in opening the Elk River Walmart branch and leading the Zimmerman branch project, turning a profit in under two years and strengthening local ties. His leadership during the Great Recession and the COVID-19 pandemic showcased his ability, along with the bank’s leadership team, to navigate uncertainty with confidence and strategic vision. Together, they successfully implemented bold measures to stabilize operations, protect customer relationships, and subsequently managed $100 million in PPP loans within just two months.
As COO, Bill champions a customer-first philosophy, driving operational excellence and fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation. He has partnered with HR to introduce StrengthsFinder, empowering employees and creating a positive, high-performing workplace. His belief in adaptability and continuous improvement has positioned The Bank of Elk River as a leader in both technology and service.
Bill’s influence extends beyond the bank. He serves as Vice Chair of BankIn Minnesota, is a Federal Delegate Board Member for the Independent Community Bankers of America, and contributes to ICBA’s Bank Innovation and Solutions Committee and ThinkTech Accelerator Selection Committee. His involvement ensures community banks remain strong and competitive nationwide.
Bill’s dedication to community service is evident through his work with local boards, chambers of commerce, and non-profit organizations, including United Way and Sherburne County EDA. His efforts have strengthened the bank’s connection to the communities it serves.
John Babcock, Chairman, President, and CEO, shared his thoughts: “I’ve been fortunate enough to watch Bill develop and hone his professional talents within the bank, building a strong reputation in the community banking industry both locally and nationally. Bill’s enthusiasm and can-do approach to business are invaluable; he sees obstacles as opportunities to overcome and move forward. I feel privileged to have him as such an integral part of our team, and anyone who knows Bill, whether inside or outside the bank, understands that sentiment. His energy, vision, and commitment make a lasting impact.”
As The Bank of Elk River continues to grow and innovate, Bill remains focused on delivering exceptional service and building a workplace where employees feel valued and inspired. His leadership philosophy is simple yet powerful: “To be an authentic, compassionate, and courageous leader who inspires growth and relevance while leading by example.”
