Tips for New College Grads

"Your schooling may be over but remember that your education continues." – Author unknown

Graduation season is nearly upon us, a time of both apprehension and excitement for anyone walking across the stage to receive their degree. Some may have landed a dream job, and others may still be testing the waters, determining which direction to take their career. No matter what the future holds, we’ve put together a few top tips to keep in mind as you work toward success.

BE CURIOUS

Leaving college and coursework behind doesn’t mean that you should stop learning. Yes, you’ll have plenty of unfamiliar processes and procedures to learn at your new place of employment, but you should also stay curious about the world around you. Take up a new hobby, read books, keep asking why. Engage your brain outside of work and keep life interesting.

PRACTICE SELF-CARE

Adjusting to new job, a new place to live, and a new routine can sometimes be overwhelming. Take time to take care of yourself. Recognize when you’re feeling stressed and take a break. Determine the best ways to recharge and re-energize and add these items to your schedule. Eat a variety of healthy foods, exercise, and get enough sleep. Spend time with friends (see below).

CULTIVATE FRIENDSHIPS

The support and encouragement of friends are important at any stage in life. While you’ll most likely keep in touch with many of your college pals, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to meet new people and create new social circles. Get to know your co-workers and others in your industry. Take advantage of networking events. You’re sure to find people who share the same interests and values.

DO THE MATH

While a regular paycheck may tempt you to splurge on new furniture, concerts, or weekend trips to visit friends, be smart with your money. Create a budget and stick to it. Live within your means, balance your checkbook (even if you don’t write actual checks), and enroll in your company’s 401(k) or other retirement fund, especially if a match is offered.
